The gist of Midnight Madness:

Form a team by designating a team color and a captain for your team.

On the night of June 8, 2002, the teams compete in an urban puzzle-solving race to a finish line whose location you won't know until you find it.

So gather your forces and spread the word as you make preparations for the upcoming battle. The original Master Puzzlers, Dan Michaelson and Mat Laibowitz have returned together with Tamara Maletic and Shauna Grob to test your acuity, stamina, and, well, patience in the fifth not-quite annual Midnight Madness, Midnight Madness V: V for Vendetta.

Guidelines:

At 9:00 pm on the night of this Saturday, June 8, 2002, meet on the plaza at 36th St and 11th Ave.

There, each team will be handed a clue.

When you solve that clue, it will lead to a location somewhere in the city where you must find the next clue -- which, when you solve it, will lead to another location, until eventually you will reach a finish line. The first team to cross it is the winner.

Each time you find a clue, be sure to call the Game HQ hotline -- phone #s will be distributed at the beginning of the game. This call starts a hint timer; after a certain number of minutes following your discovery of the puzzle, you are entitled to a hint; then, another hint; and finally, the answer to the puzzle. Don't forget to call and update us when you find each puzzle!

All clues were bounded within an area of the Manhattan contained by Houston, 34th St, and the two rivers.

These are no rules of Midnight Madness except these:

The prime directive: no tampering with the clues.

The maximum size of a team is 12 people.

Team motor vehicles, i.e. a car/motorbike owned, rented or borrowed for the night, are prohibited. All other forms of transport (taxi, public transportation, walking, human-powered scooters or bicycles) are ok.

Each team needed at least one cell phone, a flashlight, a map of Manhattan, subway fare, and perhaps a set of binoculars. The only way for us to get in touch with you during the game is the cell phone number, so please forward you number to gamecontrol@midnight-madness.org if you have not already done so.
